Standout Snow Slides: Most Iconic Tobogganing Hills in Canada
Where winter adventures and iconic views collide

One of the best things about winter in Canada is sliding down a snow-covered hill. Across the country, certain slopes stand out for a combination of views and fun thrills that can’t be beat.

When snow blankets the ground for several months at a time, one of the best ways to make the most of it is with an unforgettable tobogganing adventure. While any slope can turn into a winter playground, there are those that offer a little extra. Here are some of the most iconic hills to chase down winter thrills and what makes each one stand out.

Mount Royal (Montreal, Quebec)

Mount Royal is a classic tobogganing spot located right in the heart of Montreal. It’s a perfect place for families and friends who want to make the most of a snowy afternoon without needing to venture far. The slopes are gentle but still offer plenty of excitement, along with views of the city skyline through the trees. With ample space to spread out, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours here.

Au 1884 Toboggan Slide (Quebec City, Quebec)

Over in Quebec City’s Dufferin Terrace, winter thrill seekers can find a different kind of tobogganing experience. Instead of a typical hill, the Au 1884 Toboggan Slide is a wooden chute overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Riders reach surprisingly fast speeds (sometimes up to 70 km/h!) as they zoom down the 800 ft slide. Up to four people can ride per sled, and more weight equals more speed!

Riverdale Park (Toronto, Ontario)

Riverdale Park in Toronto undoubtedly offers one of the best urban tobogganing experiences in the country, with opportunities for everyone to have fun. The east side, with its broad and smooth slope, is perfect for families. Meanwhile, the west side offers a steeper descent for those who are after speed. Either option provides spectacular skyline views, which makes this one of the most photographed tobogganing spots in Canada.

Mooney’s Bay Hill (Ottawa, Ontario)

Mooney’s Bay is a must-visit if you’re near Canada’s capital in the wintertime. With a large, open tobogganing area, this is a go-to spot for a proper ride down a snowy slope. Add in scenic views of the Rideau waterway and convenient parking, and you’ve got a top tobogganing destination. The height of the hill offers fast and exciting rides, but it’s still accessible for families as well.

St. Andrew’s Heights (Calgary, Alberta)

This Calgary hill has a stellar reputation as the city’s premier tobogganing area. Often referred to locally as a “monster” hill, St. Andrew’s Heights is steep and fast. The slope is also exceptionally long, which means you get more time to savor the ride. There is a smaller and gentler hill nearby as well that is perfect for kids, so that the whole family can enjoy a snow day out.

Whistler Olympic Park (Callaghan Valley, British Columbia)

Whistler Olympic Park offers a fun, family-friendly tobogganing hill set beneath the impressive 2010 Olympic ski jumps. The lanes are always guaranteed to be smooth and well-maintained, so you know it’s going to be a good run. With stunning mountain views and a cozy lodge to warm up in, you can easily spend a whole day enjoying the park. Access to the tobogganing hill is included with snowshoe and cross-country ski tickets.
